Rev. Jim's sermon: "It's Independence Day"Link to today's Sermon: "It's Independence Day"
Friends of Trinity MCC in Gainesville:
I am so happy to join you this week as Provisional Pastor. After such a long relationship with you as guest preacher and friend it seems appropriate that our paths would come together on a more formal basis in this way. We’ve been busy settling into the apartment and getting ready to be fully connected with you. As we agreed during our recent weekend together, exciting times are on the horizon for us as we listen to and follow God’s voice together.
This Sunday I will begin my usual practice of placing a list of available appointment times in the lobby. I love to have what I call “getting to know you meetings” with as many people as possible. Typically, these last for about 30 minutes during which we do just what the meeting is called; get to know one another. Beyond my desire to know you better, there is another purpose for these sessions. As we get to know each other better I will be better prepared to respond in times of need, for example during times of sickness, in the hospitals, at a time of grief and at other times when already having the basis of a relationship formed will help us. Please sign up for one of these meetings. If you want to come with your partner, I would love that. Please sign up for two back-to-back slots if that is the case. If you need to set up a time other than those listed, see me and we’ll work something out. I’m here for you and will always do my best to work with your scheduling needs. If you have a specific pastoral care need, this is one way to schedule a time with me; others will come.
Just a brief word about meals; I would love to share a meal or a coffee with you. I am a complete vegetarian which means I don’t eat any meat products (beef, pork, poultry, fish, etc.) or anything cooked in meat products (broth, for example). In addition, I had weight loss surgery in 2007 and am only able to eat very small meals. I want you to know about that now because I never want to risk offending you or hurting your feelings around food, or anything else. If you’re interested in having a meal together I would really love that, and we can chat together about how to work it out. Finally for now, I don’t yet have assured local contact information. The best way to reach me is at Revjim@thecommunityactivist.
. If you don’t have access to email, please contact one of the Deacons for pastoral issues or one of the Board members for administrative issues. They will always know how to reach me. I hope to have local contact information for you by next week.
I’m so blessed to join you here and I can’t tell you how excited I am to see what God is going to do among us. I’m looking forward with great anticipation to serving as you and yours.
