Barb Petersen - Co Vice Moderator - mccgainesville.org@board

Barb is one of 6 (yes six) Barbaras at Trinity MCC, so is often referred to by her last name.  Barb was born in Montana with a father that was a World War 1 veteran & a mother who had been a high school principal.  She entered college to become a nurse, met a guy, got married, changed careers & went to work for the telephone company.  Two children later, she became a manager of a telephone company location in the town that housed Montana State Prison.

Twenty seven years later, a divorce, becoming a corporate trainer, moving to Arizona, meeting Barbara & as they say………the rest is history.  She and Barbara have been with MCC since 1989 and Barb has served on the Board of 3 MCC churches in different states.

Barb and Barbara trained people in 14 states, & loved it.  Four years later, a buyout was offered, they took it as both of their mothers were in poor health.  They moved to Florida, built a house, continued their faith journey in Trinity MCC, and enjoy their 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandkids, & 3 dogs.  As she says ‘we are blessed’.

Nita White - Co Vice Moderator - mccgainesville.org@board

Nita was born in Decatur County, Tennessee, the youngest of seven children.  She has lived in Florida since 1968 except for a three-year stint in Auburn, Alabama. Nita earned a BS in Sec. Ed. with a major in Biology and minor in Sociology from Jacksonville State University (Alabama) and a Master of Arts from the University of South Florida.  Retired since 2003, thirty-two of her employment years were spent as a social worker with the State of Florida and the Marion Co. Florida School System.

Nita had spent fifteen years in a conservative, evangelical church when she left organized religion for five years.  During the summer of 1999, Nita attended Trinity MCC for the first time and experienced such a spiritual peace within herself that she knew Trinity was a place where she could once again worship God in spirit and in truth.  In October, 1999 she became a member of Trinity and since that time has served in a variety of leadership roles – Deacon, Chair of the Welcoming Team, Worship Coordinator, Chair of Transition Team and various positions on the Board of Directors.  Attending the Millennium March in Washington, D.C. in 2000 with thousands of other LGBTQ folks, further convinced Nita that she would never turn back from living her life and worshiping God as her authentic self.

Tamara was raised in the Midwest, and lived in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1989 through 2012. She earned a B.A. in Psychology from Webster University, and worked in an administrative capacity at several local businesses over the years. She was also active in politics, running for office multiple times and advocating on issues, including anti-war protests. In 2002 Tamara was hired at Washington University School of Medicine, where she worked in the Epidemiology and Prevention Research Group on several research studies, including an HIV prevention intervention for women in the criminal justice system. Tamara moved her family to Gainesville in 2013, after her boss became Founding Chair of the Department of Epidemiology at UF. Tamara was raised in several Christian traditions but had not been active in any church for many years prior to relocating to Florida. The warm welcome and loving embrace she and her family experienced upon visiting Trinity MCC in August of 2015 made it a natural spiritual home for her. She became a member in early 2016 and was elected to the Board late that year.

Bruce Burbach - Music Director

Bruce Burbach was born in Hollywood, Florida.  His mother plays the piano and at age 2 he started banging on the family piano much to his parents chagrin.  His mom started to teach him the notes on the piano and at age 4 he was taken to a music evaluator who told his parents that he needed to start piano lessons right away! He continued to take piano lessons for years and started playing specials in church at the age of 7. When he was 11, he and his family moved to Lake Worth, Florida.  He started lessons with the pianist at the church.  She then had him start to accompany playing the hymns for the congregation.  He also started to sing in the choir. In high school, he auditioned for a singing group called “His People” and became a tenor in that group for 2 years. When he was 16, they moved to Keystone Heights, Florida.  When they arrived he almost immediately started accompanying the church as its principle pianist until he left for college.  He also directed a small singing group called “SonRise” with his fellow peers. He started college in the Winter of 1980 at Toccoa Falls Bible College in Toccoa Falls, Georgia.  Because people at the college already knew of his music abilities, he immediately auditioned to accompany a small singing group at the college named “Exaltation.” It was comprised of 6 singers and him. The group traveled around in the Northeast United States performing throughout the summer of 1980 for churches, youth groups and camps. He was in the United States Navy in the mid-eighties and attended churches where he accompanied many soloists.  In the late eighties, he moved to San Francisco, California.  He took Pipe Organ lessons at a college and was immediately put in touch with an organist at a United Methodist church.  He sang in the choir and accompanied many soloists on the piano and organ.  He has also played for numerous weddings. In 1994 auditioned for and sang with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus for 6 years as a member of the 200+ voice choir. Bruce is now ready to move on and accompany a church along with its choir and congregation.  Bruce is very excited to now be attending the Trinity Metropolitan Community Church and honored to become its next music director.
